3.2.1.

3 Things I Learned-
  • I learned that there were many uprisings and rebellions due to colonization.
  • I learned that the Suez Canal had just as big an impact on today as it did then.
  • I learned that the ways that an empire could control a colony.
2 Things I Found Interesting-
  • I found it interesting that companies, such as Dole Fruit and East India Trading, could have control over other nations.
  • I found it interesting that people weren't concerned about the causes for disease enough to develop a germ theory before.
1 Question I Still Have-
  • If the Suez Canal was controlled by one nation, did that nation use it to its advantage and try to weaken its enemies economy by not allowing them to use it? Did it play a huge role in the military at any time?

Gandhi

"An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind." -Gandhi

I think that Gandhi is saying that revenge is never the answer. Just because someone has done wrong to you, doing something wrong to them won't make anything better. So in the case of the time period we are studying, the people that are being opressed and forced out may not think its fair, but if they were to regain power and begin to opress those who opressed them it wouldn't be a victory before it would be a loss. Sometimes you have to step up and realize somethings wrong and stop it before everyone ends up the victoms of their own world.

I really like this quote because it shows that revenge is just as bad as the initial action that was done. I can relate this to every day life.

The Suez Canal

The Suez Canal is controlled by the Suez Canal Authority, or SCA, which was established on July 26, 1956. The SCA does basically everything from managing and operating to maitenance. The canal is frequently used by modern ships, as it is the fastest crossing from the Atlantic Ocean to the Indian Ocean. Nearly 1,485 ships travel through it in one month.  If it weren't for the canal, the prices of many products, such as oil, would be higher because of the much longer shipping time.  The tolls paid by the ships that travel it represent an important source of income for the Egyptian government.

The Sepoy Rebellion

This rebellion was sparked because the British controlled mostof India and the people felt that they were being pushed to convert to Christianity. The Indians didn't like the way the British ruled and, in 1857, the sepoys found out that the cartridges the British had given them were sealed with pork and beef fat and required them to bite the seal off. To the Hindus, beef is sacred, and Muslims do not eat pork. The sepoys were angry and refused to use the cartridges. The British began jailing those who would not listen and on March 10, 1857, the sepoys rebelled. The rebellion spread quickly through India and the East India Trading Company did not regain control for over a year. The British ruled harder over India, but there was more rebellion and racism after.

Protectorate

One way an empire could control a colony is a protectorate. A protectorate is where a country of territory keeps its own government but is under the control of a foreign power. Instead of replacing the original government with European methods, they allowed that government to stay, but still held control over that countries government. An example of a protectorate during this time period would be the British establishing a protectorate over the Niger River delta.

Imperialism

Why it helped-
  • Industrialization and new technology was introduced by larger nations which helped boost economies.
  • Health clinics started to spread and people became aware of disease causing germs.
  • The production of food increased due to improved farming methods.
Why it hurt-
  • Religious beliefs were being forced upon natives.
  • Basic rights were taken away from people of all nations.
  • It spread slavery because Africans were being shipped to plantations all across Europe and America.

The Germ Theory

The Germ Theory was developed by a French chemist named Louis Pasteur in the mid 1800's. He discovered that the microscopic organisms in alcohol are what cause it to ferment and later discovered that they are the cause of disease. Through what Pasteur had found, surgeon Joseph Lister became interested and started to examine surgery units. This led to cleaner environments for surgeries and a greater amount of surgery survivors. With more knowledge about disease coming about, vaccines and prevention of sickness began to come to light. These breakthroughs have helped to improve the health of people all around the world.
