Protectorate

One way an empire could control a colony is a protectorate. A protectorate is where a country of territory keeps its own government but is under the control of a foreign power. Instead of replacing the original government with European methods, they allowed that government to stay, but still held control over that countries government. An example of a protectorate during this time period would be the British establishing a protectorate over the Niger River delta.
